Dr. Chandra Shekhar Lal   A View of Biochemistry Lab

The Division of Biochemistry is actively participating in mainstream research programmes of the Institute. Our principle focuses of research in visceral leishmaniasis (VL) are identification of biochemical markers in the disease progression, its mechanism, nutritional aspects involved in disease progression and routine biochemical assessment in clinical drug trials. Besides, the Division offers 'on the job training courses' to post graduate students from various Universities in India. To accomplish the above, the division has fully developed infrastructure.

Ongoing Research Projects:

  • Pathophysiology of lipoproteins in VL infection
  • Study of effect of zinc trafficking in macrophage antimicrobial response in VL
  • Study of calcium and magnesium in the pathophysiology of visceral leishmaniasis
  • Role of hypocholesterolemia in VL

Other Scientific & Academic assignments:


  • Liver Function Test (LFTs), Kidney Function Tests (KFTs), Lipid Profile assay , Coagulation , Electrolytes , Trace elements and Nutritional markers analysis of kala-azar patients as well as outdoor patients as and when required
  • Internal/External Quality Assurance on regular intervals for credibility of clinical research data for clinical drug trials


  • Training and guidance for project dissertation to the students of M.Sc. and M.Tech. students of different Universities.


  • To the Ph.D. students during course work and to the project trainees.

Guidance of research scholars:

  • Imparting training & guidance to the student working as SRF, JRF and research fellow for Ph.D.
  • Project Guidance to M. Pharm. student from NIPER, Hajipur, Bihar.

Major Achievements : 

  • Identification of cholesterol and triglyceride in severity and incidence of VL.
  • Identification of role of lipoproteins in pathophysiology of VL.
  • Explored glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and microalbuminuria as an early predictor for glomerular involvement particularly in pediatric VL.
  • Identified role of zinc and magnesium towards chronicity in VL.
  • Identified few biochemical diagnostics such as transaminases alterations during clinical drug trials of Miltefosine and Paromomycin.
  • Established good clinical laboratory practices (GCLP) and quality control for clinical investigations during drug trials.
